How the search process works
Every search is unique, but the process I follow is the same — careful, methodical, and always guided by what's right for you. Here's what to expect from start to finish.
Every search is unique, but the process I follow is the same — careful, methodical, and always guided by what's right for you. Here's what to expect from start to finish.
1 Free consultation
We start with a free, no-obligation conversation — by video call, phone, messenger or email, whichever you prefer. You tell me your story: what you know, what DNA tests you've taken, and what you're hoping to find. There's no pressure and no commitment at this stage. I simply want to understand your situation fully.
2 DNA assessment
I review your DNA matches across whichever platforms you've tested on — AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, or GEDmatch. I'll give you an honest assessment of whether the evidence is strong enough to pursue and what the realistic chances of success are. If I don't think I can help, I'll tell you that too.
3 Research and investigation
If we decide to proceed, I get to work. This involves building family trees from your DNA matches, identifying common ancestors, cross-referencing genealogical records, and following leads until the picture becomes clear. This stage can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the complexity of your case.
4 Findings and next steps
When I have results to share, I present them to you carefully and at your pace. Finding a biological parent can bring up complex emotions, and I'll be there to support you through what the findings mean and what — if anything — you'd like to do next. You are always in control of this process.
To give your search the best chance of success, it helps to have at least one of the following:
· A DNA test taken with AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage, or FamilyTreeDNA
· Raw DNA data uploaded to GEDmatch (free)
· Any known information about the biological parent — even partial details help
If you haven't taken a DNA test yet, don't worry — I can advise you on which test to take and where to get the best value.
Not sure if you have enough to go on? Book a free consultation and I'll tell you honestly what's possible with what you have.
How much does it cost?
Initial consultations and DNA assessments are always free. If further research is needed, I'll provide a clear, written quote before any work begins. I also welcome donations from those who are able to contribute — this helps me keep consultations free for everyone.
How long does a search take?
It varies considerably. Some cases come together within days; others require weeks even months of patient investigation. I'll always give you a realistic timescale once I've assessed your DNA matches.
What if the biological parent doesn't want to be found?
This is something we discuss carefully at the consultation stage. My role is to identify who a biological parent is — what you choose to do with that information is entirely your decision. I can advise on sensitive ways to make contact if that's what you want.
Is my information kept confidential?
Absolutely. All information you share with me is treated with complete discretion. I am registered with the ICO as a data controller and handle all personal and DNA data in full compliance with UK GDPR.
